Frequently Asked Questions
We know our user community is super smart and typically won't review Frequently Asked Questions to find out how to use Referican, but figured why not answer some of the most common questions just in case anyone felt adventurous. 😊
What is Referican?
Referican is a service that connects talented individuals with others working at their favorite top companies in an effort to facilitate a referral to desirable job opportunities. Referican also helps those working in such firms with finding great talent to refer, ultimately allowing them to maximize their referral bonus potential. How does it work?
During sign up, users select if they'd like to be referred (Referent) or refer talent (Referrer). Once chosen, appropriate details related to the account type are provided, like work history and up to three positions of interest with URLs for a Referent or the current employer for Referrers. Following this, Referents simply wait for a connection from a Referrer that would like to refer them to their company. Similarly, Referrers review their Feed for talent that is interested in working at their company. Once a Referrer accepts a Referent's request, the Referent determines if they'd like to share their identity with that particular Referrer, and can then use the Referican chat to exchange pertinent information needed to complete the referral, like a resume or portfolio. After a referral is made, both users can rate their experience right from within the chat. How much does it cost?
Referican is currently free to use for Referents (those looking for referrals) and Referrers (those making referrals). Advanced paid services may be offered at a later date, where our user community would be amply informed at such time. How do I sign up?
Users can sign up for Referican by clicking / tapping the "Sign Up" button on the top right of the homepage. Since Referican is a service for professionals, we felt it best to offer an option to sign up with LinkedIn. Additionally, you can sign up using your Google account or a traditional email account, which will send a link to your email address. Please note, if you do not receive the link, remember to check your SPAM folder before requesting another. What is a Referent?
A Referent is the type of user looking to be referred to a desirable company on Referican. What is a Referrer?
A Referrer is the type of user looking to refer a Referent to their desirable company on Referican. How do I reveal my identity to either a Referrer or Referent?
As a Referrer, you've successfully indicated that your identity can be revealed to a Referent the second you accept a Referent's request for referral from the Feed. This does not happen, however, until a Referent reveals their identity to you, which they can do by clicking / tapping the button at the top of the chat window allowing their identity to be revealed. How do I upload / share my resume or other documents with Referrers?
Referican values our user's privacy and aims to deter any gender or racial bias in the referral process. To that end, Referents can only upload files after revealing their identity to a Referrer directly within a chat. At that point, the upload option will become available. Remember to only reveal your identity to a Referrer you feel comfortable working with. Also, for your privacy, uploaded files expire after 24 hours, therefore, don't be surprised if your Referrer asks you to share it again at a later date. What is a pitch and what is it used for?
Referents are asked to optionally share a "pitch" during the account creation process. This is a simple set of text that can be used to help Referrers determine if they want to refer you. While this field is optional, we find that it leads to a higher acceptance rate from Referrers, therefore, highly recommend that Referents fill it in. Moreover, Referrers sometimes use this directly within their firm's referral system to narrate why a Referent should be hired, so it is truly beneficial to complete it.What is a good example of a pitch?
We've found that sharing some high-level information about yourself is usually sufficient. For example "I've been doing xyz for # years and believe I'd be well suited for xyz roles in your organization. My experience in xyz also lends to my abilities to do xyz, therefore, would further assist with my strong ability to handle the requirements of this opportunity." filling in the pertinent numbers and "xyz" fields would be a great start! What does it mean to be a "verified" Referrer?
At Referican, we want to maximize our Referent's chances of landing their dream job. To that end, we've included the ability for our Referrers to verify their accounts, which basically proves that they actually work where they say they work. When connections are made, Referents will know if a Referrer is verified when they see the green checkmark next to their name, where an unverified account will have a red ! in the same location. While we recommend that our Referrers verify their accounts, it is not required unless they switch companies. Some individuals prefer that their company not know they're sourcing candidates from Referican, therefore, opt out of this option. Always feel free to remove any connections you don't feel comfortable working with, especially if it is due to their lack of being verified. How do I verify my Referrer account?
If you are a Referrer and want to verify your account, first navigate to the Profile tab while being signed in as a Referrer. From this page, enter your corporate email address in the box and tap / click "Send Email" (we'll already have the domain populated, so just include the first half of your email address before the @ symbol). Then, click on the link inside of the email that we send to your corporate email address and sign in (if you're not already signed in). From this point on, your account will be verified, showing the green checkmark next to your name for all Referents to see, which also increases your chances of finding Referents that want to work with you! REMEMBER: You must verify your account if you change companies to continue using the product. This is for the protection of all of our users. Why do I have to verify my Referrer account if I switch companies?
At Referican, we want to maximize our Referent's chances of landing their dream job. In the same way, we want to always ensure that any / all information portrayed by our users is up-to-date and accurate. We certainly know that individuals change jobs from time to time, therefore, to ensure there is continued accuracy of information on the platform, require such users to verify their accounts at such times. Can I look for a referral and refer others at the same time?
Yes! Referican users can be Referents and Referrers at the same time. After signing up as one type of user, simply access the opposite user menu type by clicking / tapping your profile image on the top right of the screen. Then, complete the profile creation steps for that user type and toggle between either from the same menu on the top right at any time.Which companies can I be referred to?

Referican values our user's privacy and aims to deter any gender or racial bias in the referral process. To that end, an "anonymous until absolutely necessary" model is leveraged, where we use fun / randomly generated names for users (the Referrer and Referent), like "Prickly Olive Panther" or "Frozen Crimson Gayal" to identify connections in chat communications. Actual names are only revealed after both parties have given consent. Furthermore, files exchanged, like resumes or portfolios, are purged / expire and become inaccessible after 24 hours. As a Referent, how long does my uploaded file stay available to the Referrer?

We know it can be frustrating when you don't immediately receive any connections that want to refer you to their company. This can certainly happen, especially for very competitive roles and companies. If you find yourself in this situation, consider revising aspects of your profile, such as the companies you want to work for, the roles you're looking to be referred to, and the types of headlines you've associated with your interested positions. From there, hang tight and hopefully you'll be referred sooner than later. Is Referican safe?
Referican employs the latest technology in SSL and security. Our "anonymous until absolutely necessary" model leverages fun / randomly generated names for users (the Referrer and Referent), like "Prickly Olive Panther" or "Frozen Crimson Gayal" to identify connections in chat communications. Actual names are only revealed after both parties have given consent. Additionally, files exchanged, like resumes or portfolios, are purged / expire and become inaccessible after 24 hours, ultimately maximizing user safety on the Referican platform. How do I report abuse?
